How would Europe look today if there were no EU?
Conclusion
The European conference held in Trieste on 9-11 May 2012, attended by 140 participants from 7 EU countries, concluded that:
- European integration has succeeded in producing the longest period of peace which Europe has ever experienced;
- it is necessary to continue and deepen European integration to secure peace for the future, and to make it more democratic and more effective;
- the economic dimension of European integration is, and will remain, centrally important, but it is not enough;
- in future it will be necessary to further develop the cultural, educational and linguistic dimensions of European integration, which concerns human beings and not just consumers;
- it is particularly important to strengthen the links of the citizen with European integration; among them the emotional link;
- the singing of the European anthem in a neutral language, which does not belong to one nation but may belong at the same level to all European nations and citizens, is one of many ways which contribute to the goals mentioned above;
- in the framework of European multilingualism, it is necessary to further democratize language learning, so that all students experience more success in it, and thus contribute to the educational goals of "Europe 2020".
